Our Generator

Snowy Hydro has played a vital role in Australia’s energy landscape for over seven decades, beginning with the inception of the Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme in 1949. Over the years, the company has evolved into a comprehensive energy provider, ensuring reliable electricity supply to the nation.

At the heart of Snowy Hydro’s operations is the iconic Snowy Scheme, which harnesses the power of water to generate electricity. Complementing this hydro-electric infrastructure are gas and diesel-fired peaking generators, totalling 16 power stations and a pumping station distributed across New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia.

This extensive network provides a substantial generating capacity of over 5,500MW, contributing significantly to meeting the energy demands of the region.In response to the growing emphasis on renewable energy, Snowy Hydro has diversified its portfolio to include contracted energy from ten wind and solar projects. This expansion underscores the company’s commitment to sustainability and aligns with broader efforts to transition towards cleaner energy sources. As a fully Australian Government owned entity operating under the Corporations Act (Cth), Snowy Hydro is governed by an independent Board of Directors and operates on a strictly commercial basis.
